| Love and support for vulnerable young people in the UK’s inner cities |
During 2007, I went on a Business in the Community ‘Seeing is Believing’ visit. This included spending time with the Kids Company charity in South East London.
Since 1996 the charity has given love and support to over 11,000 vulnerable young people in the UK’s inner cities. No one could fail to be moved by what they achieve, or by the sheer energy of its founder, Camila Batmanghelidjh. She certainly captured my imagination, and over time closer ties have gradually evolved between our two organizations. In November Camila brought some of the young people to our Basingstoke offices to talk about the work they do, and as a result staff at the site chose Kids Company for their Christmas charity this year.
We’ve now agreed to help them with a new research project, which will be run by Great Ormond Street Hospital. This will examine how domestic trauma can lead to aggression or introversion in young children, and how the counselling and therapies offered by Kids Company can help. As one of the leading players in the treatment of ADHD in young people – and with some of our treatments set to be launched in the UK and Europe – working with Kids Company is a natural and positive way to give practical support to an area that’s always been important to us, and which is closely associated with our business.
Shire’s new website makes all its clinical trials results open to all.
The pharmaceutical sector has been in the spotlight over the last few years, and one of the issues that has attracted particular attention has been clinical trials. There have been growing demands for greater transparency about how and where these trials are run, and how the results are used and publicized. We’ve now created a dedicated website to carry the results of all Shire-sponsored clinical trials, in a consistent and straightforward format that’s easy to use for doctors and patients alike. The same information will also be posted on www.clincalstudyresults.org/.
You can access the site at www.ShireStudyResults.org
