Shire Florence team embraces the spirit of giving

Shire employees from Florence, Kentucky rallied together to adopt the Penguin Playschool, helping to make the holiday season a little brighter by purchasing gifts from the school’s “giving tree” for those children whose families may be less fortunate. Shire employees purchased and wrapped nearly two dozen gifts, including new coats for a few of the children who have a greater need.

November 2007 – Shire proudly supports Wireless Philadelphia with a donation of more than 445 gently used and refurbished laptop computers.

Wireless Philadelphia, a non-profit organization, was created to help transform Philadelphia’s neighborhoods by making high-speed internet access more available and affordable to citizens who are not yet online, so they can begin to use technology to improve their educational, employment, health and life opportunities.

November 2007 – To highlight the European Transplant and Dialysis Games in 2008, the organizers – a patient association group of dialysis and transplanted patients – completed a bicycle “Tour” through Germany alongside the river Rhine to Würzburg.

September 2007 – This year Shire Ireland was the exclusive sponsor for the Irish Transplant team for the 16th World Transplant Games in Bangkok. The Irish Team subsequently met with the Irish President, Mary McAleese, on their return all dressed in their suits.

Shire ‘Striders’ take part in the British Heart Foundation’s South Downs Walk

November 2007 – Three intrepid Shire ‘Striders’ dragged themselves out of bed at an unfeasibly early hour and pulled on their walking boots in preparation for the British Heart Foundation’s 12.5 miles South Downs Walk. They completed the course in 4.5 hours and raised over £800 for the British Heart Foundation.

Shire team participates in the Memory Walk at Citizen’s Bank Park

November 2007 – Despite the wind, rain and chilly temperatures, Shire Chesterbrook team members and their families proudly participated in the Memory Walk at Citizen’s Bank Park to support their loved ones who have been affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Memory Walk is the Alzheimer’s Association’s signature event for awareness and fundraising to support research. Thanks to the generosity of family and friends, Team Shire was able to raise approximately $4,900 to support this wonderful cause.

Shire Day at the Boston Children’s Museum

October 2007 – Shire sponsored a free day of fun for children ages 15 and under at the Boston Children’s Museum. The museum aims to help children understand and enjoy the world in which they live.

Around 2,000 guests visited the museum, and had the opportunity to tour the permanent exhibits in the museum, as well as engage in a variety of special “Curious Kids” activities created especially for that day by Boston Children’s Museum science educators. These interactive projects, designed to engage entire families, were staffed by over 20 Shire employee volunteers.

July 2007 – Shire has been selected to receive the Baltimore Regional Employer Award in recognition of the exceptional work demonstrated by our Shire Owings Mills and our Shire Quality Assurance Training and Development team through our Shire “Training Camp” program. This award – presented to Shire in the “Innovator” category – recognizes businesses as a way of highlighting unique achievements in the area of workforce development.

Shire Team in GRIM Challenge

December 2007 – A team of six from Shire Regulatory UK took part in the GRIM Challenge, with two colleagues supporting them along the way. Grim by name and Grim by nature, the challenge is a gruelling off road 8 mile triathlon of running, crawling and wading.

The team raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society which is of special significance to the Regulatory Team. The kind of work that the MS Society does is provision of respite care, specialist MS nurses, information about MS and funding of research projects. All team members completed the challenge and raised over £2,000 for a great cause.

Shire employee in Earthwatch expedition in Ecuador

September 2007 – One of Shire’s Senior Research Specialists at Shire HGT in Cambridge MA participated in an Earthwatch expedition in Ecuador, South America. Earthwatch is a non-profit organization that supports scientific field research by offering volunteers the opportunity to join research teams around the world. They field teams on every continent that examine subjects including all aspects of ecology, archeology and meteorology. The project involved surveying the numbers, health and diversity of birds found in a rare ecosystem known as a cloud forest.
